Soften Butter in 5 Minutes Without a Microwave (3 Methods)

Your recipe calls for softened butter. Your butter is straight from the fridge. You don't have 30 minutes to wait. Here are 3 ways to soften butter fast.

Method 1: The Grater (Fastest - 2 minutes)

Use a box grater to grate cold butter into small pieces. The increased surface area means it softens in 2-3 minutes at room temperature. This is the method I use most often.

Method 2: The Pound (3 minutes)

Put the butter between two sheets of parchment paper. Pound it with a rolling pin until it's about 1/4 inch thick. It'll soften in about 3 minutes.

Method 3: The Warm Glass (5 minutes)

Fill a glass with hot water. Let it sit for 1 minute. Empty it. Place the warm glass over the stick of butter. The trapped heat softens the butter in about 5 minutes.

What NOT to Do

Don't microwave butter to soften it. Microwaves heat unevenly - you'll end up with melted edges and a cold center. If you accidentally melt your butter, use our butter converter to adjust the measurement - melted butter has a different volume than softened.

How to Tell It's Ready

Properly softened butter should give slightly when pressed but still hold its shape. It should be about 65-68°F. If you can leave a fingerprint in it without it squishing, it's ready.
